Supportive Programs for Healing and Wellness

Mission & Values

Since 1989, the Institute for Health and Healing Program at Marin General Hospital has offered innovative, integrative approaches to health care that bring together education, psychospiritual support, the arts and complementary therapies with traditional medicine. We recognize the link between physical, emotional, mental, social and creative health, and foster approaches to healing and wellness for individuals, communities and the health care system.
As one of the most comprehensive and long-standing programs within a hospital setting nationwide, we have discovered many creative, effective approaches to meeting human needs within health care. This program is not only of value to the community we directly serve, but as a unique exemplary hospital, we frequently offer guidance to other institutions, serving as a consultant to those seeking to implement similar programs. We recognize the wisdom and humane care that emerges when creative bridges are built between the hospital, community services, artists, educators, complementary medical practitioners, and physicians.
The vision of creating a healing environment for patients and staff directed the choice of art work and colors used throughout the Cancer Care Center, and worked toward the creation of the nationally acclaimed Healing Garden.

Healing Environments

Healing Garden: Located in the patient waiting area in Oncology, the garden contains plants used to create medicines used in chemotherapy as well as other plants and flowers known for their healing powers. The lush green plants and natural stone fountain inspire a contemplative, uplifting atmosphere.
Meditation Garden: Located in the hospital's Marin Cancer Institute, the garden offers a surprising retreat of serenity and privacy amidst tree ferns, with the natural sounds of a marble fountain.
Rotating and permanent arts exhibits: Art has the power to buoy the spirit of both artist and viewer. It can provide an interlude that mitigates pain and preoccupation and takes us into another realm. It can articulate the subtle terrain of healing, offering clarity and new perspectives. Four art exhibits are featured annually and offer themes that can communicate an artist's experience as it relates to healing. In addition, two works were commissioned specifically for the Cancer Institute. Gail Van Dykes spiral sculpture, rendered in Persian travertine marble, arose out of her own transformative healing journey; Maya Radoczy's glass sculpture titled Photo Interspace speaks to the integration of science, art and spirituality.
